Loose Joints is proud to present Painted Frames, a rare and radiant body of work by the legendary Malian photographer Malick Sidibé — affectionately known as the ‘Eye of Bamako.’

Sidibé’s black-and-white portraits remain iconic depictions of post-independence Mali, where the pulse of youth, music, and freedom was captured with unmatched intimacy. From the exuberance of Bamako’s dancehalls to the quiet confidence of his studio portraits, Sidibé chronicled a society in the midst of self-definition — alive with style, pride, and possibility.

Painted Frames offers a fresh lens on this legacy. Created in collaboration with local Malian artisans in the final years of Sidibé’s life, these works pair his celebrated portraits with vivid, hand-painted frames. Far from decorative flourishes, the frames were deeply personal: heirlooms, gifts, and emblems of status that moved between hands and generations. They embodied the same spirit as the photographs themselves — expressions of joy, dignity, and collective identity.
